Cenacle Information
The Lord requested we observe " Christian Shabbos" which is an observance of a perpetual easter celebrated every week from Crucifixion Day-Friday until Resurrection Day-Sunday.
The term “Sabbath” comes from the Hebrew word “Shabbat,” meaning “rest” or “cessation.” In Christian tradition, it is a day for worship, spiritual reflection, and a break from work, rooted in the biblical creation narrative and expressed throughout Scripture, including the New Testament.
In the Gospels, Jesus emphasizes the Sabbath’s importance while countering legalistic views. “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. Therefore the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath” (Mark 2:27-28). This clarifies that the Sabbath is meant to bless humanity with rest and communion with God, not to impose burdensome rules.
Acts of Mercy
Jesus healed on the Sabbath (e.g., Luke 13:10-17), showing that doing good aligns with God’s intent. These healings illustrate that the Sabbath is designed to benefit, not restrict, those who honor it.
Transition in the Early Church
Meeting on the First Day
After Jesus’ resurrection “on the first day of the week” (Mark 16:9; John 20:19), early believers gathered on that day (Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 16:2). This shift is seen as a remembrance of Christ’s resurrection, calling Sunday the “Lord’s Day” Resurrection Day (Revelation 1:10).
Practical Observance of the Christian Sabbath
Setting Aside Work
Many Christians observe Sunday-Resurrection Day as a day to cease typical labor and focus on worship and fellowship, reflecting God’s design for physical and spiritual refreshment.
Worship and Fellowship-worship includes prayer, singing, praises, Scripture exhortation, and communion, as seen in the early church (Acts 2:42-47). These gatherings foster believers to testify to God’s work, unity and love, building a stronger love for each other and Jesus Christ.
Spiritual Significance
Reflection of Redemption
The Sabbath serves as a reminder of believers’ redemption through Christ’s death and resurrection. Hebrews 4:9 speaks of “a Sabbath rest for the people of God,” highlighting the eternal rest found in salvation.
Dependence on God
Pausing work emphasizes trust in God as provider, fostering thankfulness, spiritual renewal, and deeper fellowship with Him.
